Thoughts about Printing & “Co-op” Bookmarks
When thinking about literature to hand out in the community, think printed Bookmark! Printed bookmarks save trees and cost less to handout in the community.
A printed Bookmark with the right content can drive customers to your website and then on your website you have an electronic brochure posted.
Our basic advice is to ‘print-less’ and ‘post-more’ as in post your ‘Full Brochure’ online as an electronic pdf (Portable Document Format – PDF) and design your online ‘Brochures’ to be compatible with home and business desktop printers. The pdf format for brochures is compatible with virtually all computers operating systems.
- Bookmarks Verses Rack Cards
Rack Cards are simply large Bookmarks. Typical Sizes are:
Bookmarks are often 2.5” x 7” while Rack Cards are generally 4” x 9” - Both Bookmarks and Rack Cards products generally have no folding and are printed both sides
- Digital Printing often offers Ultra Thick Stock and Gloss Coating Options
If you use digital printing services then Bookmarks and Rack Cards can often be printed on thick stock and have a gloss coating. Contact SeniorsResourceGuide.com to ask about our bookmark program. - Sample Bookmark Designs:
- “Co-op” Bookmarks
This refers to sharing a bookmark with another company. With this approach each company provides artwork for a side of the bookmark and then shares the cost of printing. Enough Bookmarks are printed for both companies to use and distribute. Keep in mind that with the “Co-op” bookmark your message is getting out to another set of potential customers too! - Hiring a Graphic Designer for your 4-Color Printing Projects
When hiring a graphic designer to prepare 4-color digital artwork for Bookmarks or Rack Cards be sure to negotiate ahead of time that your project cost includes a copy of the ‘native-files’ of the project. This means that once the project is finished the graphic designer has agreed to give you all necessary files needed in printing the item. Once you receive these files keep them in safe place. If you ever need to reprint the project and the graphic designer has moved you will have files* that another graphic designer can use.
*This is assuming that the graphic designer has used a commonly used graphics program - More about 4-Color Digital Printing
Below are specifications for the 4-color digital printing that we produce. We are sharing this so you understand that it takes special skill and graphic programs to create artwork for Bookmarks or Rack Cards or any other true 4-color printing project:
Printing Specifications for Bookmarks
For standard bookmarks and rack cards, your artwork must have a Bleed (0.125 inch past final document size) around the entire design which is required for cutting, as well as a 0.1875 inch safe zone around your design.
Acceptable File Formats – High Res Acrobat Portable Document Format (*.pdf) – Preferred
Tagged Image File Format – (*.tiff) and Encapsulated PostScript (*.eps)
Use CMYK Definition – It is best to select any colors you use for fonts or other design elements in your layout using CMYK definitions instead of RGB. Using CMYK definitions, you will have a better idea of how the colors will appear in your printed piece. Here is a common example: many programs translate the 100% Blue in RGB into a somewhat purple-looking color in CMYK. We recommend a CMYK value of 100-65-0-0 to get a nice clean blue. Working in the CMYK color space allows you to select the CMYK recipe, or "screen build", that gives you the results you want.
If you do not understand the Printing Specifications above then you need to hire a graphic designer to prepare artwork for 4-color digital printing.
Save a tree and consider “co-op” printed bookmarks or rack cards!
